Fry's Icon Palo Alto, CA

Exterior

Opened: 1990

Address: 340 Portage Ave

Theme: Wild West

This building was originally constructed in 1919 as a tomato cannery by Thomas Foon Chew, one of the most successful Chinese-American entrepreneurs of the early 20th century. It continued to operate as a fruit and vegetable canning facility under the name Sutter Packing from the 1920s through the 1950s, before housing a variety of tenants in later decades. In 1990, Fry's Electronics moved in and transformed the space into a Western-themed store. Read more about the history of the building in this report from the City of Palo Alto's Historic Resources Board. Key features included: custom Buffalo Bill-style posters, wax figures posed in frontier scenes, a miniature western diorama, and a large replica train.
